Ketum (Mitragyna speciosa) is national treasure which are widely cultivated at the Northern Malaysia. This plant is locally known as kratom or ketum. Due to having psychotropic properties that can cause addictive and euphoric effects, the trees are currently under Poison Acts 1952 in Malaysia. The interesting compounds that contribute to such properties includes alkaloids particularly mitragynine. However, the mode of actions and toxicity profiles of these metabolites yet to fully discover. Thus, thorough research should be conducted to provide profound scientific evidence that could potentially influence Malaysia's blueprint towards the perception of the plants.
