Elaeis guineensis
Research Project
Oil Palm Leaf
Starting Date
September 2017
Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a major commodity in Malaysia which ranked among the top palm oil producers. In the wake of large-scale cultivation of the crop, a huge amount of biomass is thus produced that leads to a great challenge to agricultural waste and environmental management. Oil palm leaves (OPL) are considered as an underutilized oil palm biomass with low value. Our research team had further demonstrated OPL contain high content of flavonoid with proven important pharmacological values. Hence, this research project aims to transform OPL into high value material - fine chemicals for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical uses.
